Genocide and Gender

Rape as a tool of war has been used throughout millennia as a tactic to terrorize and devastate entire populations. It is hardly ever acted on through sexual desire, but as a means to humiliate, and arouse fear into other groups of people. In extreme cases radical groups use sexual abuse to strategically reach goals and obtain information. These attacks are often committed publicly, with the rapes of women and girls (though not limited to females) often viewed as prizes, through attacks with weaponry, gang rape, torture, sex slavery, and prostitution.

Modern examples include the Rwandan Genocide, Bosnian Genocide, Asia's comfort women, The Rape of Nanking, Occurrences in the Salvadoran Civil War and Democratic Republic of the Congo and many more. Combined, millions of young women and children were raped and slaughtered, namely by military officials.
